Ariel Shimmer Deluxe Costume

If you want Princess Ariel's mermaid look to be the base of your costume, then one of these three costumes will be perfect for you. I actually find that the unofficial costumes do a better job of capturing Ariel's look from the classic animated movie, so I've started us off with two unofficial costumes that look great!

At the top of this post is a costume which is wonderful for younger kids, a colorful but elegant dress costume with a mermaid shaped tail. It comes with a cute matching headband too! For slightly older girls, the sparkling Sweet Little Mermaid costume on the right is a fantastic look. It has a varied set of textures which make it incredibly unique; any little princess is sure to stand-out from the crowd! For both of these costumes, you can get the matching red hair wig here.

Meanwhile, the unofficial mermaid costumes are pretty beautiful too! My favorite s the Shimmer Deluxe costume on the left. I especially like the two tier mermaid tail style skirt; it is very effectively done. Each set of this cool costume comes with the dress and the lovely floral hairclip.

Big Girls' Ariel Tutu Prestige Costume

If you would rather dress as Princess Ariel after her transformation into a human princess, there are plenty of costumes based on her official Disney Princess dress from the Disney merchandise available out there. My personal favorite is the incredible MyLittleLizShop costume above. Each set of this costume comes with the gorgeous blue and purple dress with flower appliqué, a neck ribbon and the matching headband.

Little Adventures Mermaid Gown

For some official Disney party dress costumes, our final two costumes are a real treat! The one on the right has an adorable mini-floral portrait of Ariel decorating it and an adorable fluffy tutu style skirts with lots of volume! Meanwhile, the one of the left is based on Ariel's above-the-waves Princess ball gown. It's gorgeous! Both are very unique and are sure to make any little girl feel special for her big royal day.

Mermaid are magical aren't they? Lots of little girls dream of shedding the surface world for the deep sea, and Halloween is the perfect time to live out that fantasy. To help out all the burgeoning sea-princesses out there, I've collected my top 10 favorite mermaid costumes for children into one place for you to check out. The main style of mermaid costume is a slinky dress with a tail shape at the base. Many of these are in soft sea-themed colors, such as seashell purples and light blues that evoke gentle waves, such as the Let's Pretend mermaid costume on the right. Those net sleeves and the pearl beads coming from the skirt are absolutely gorgeous don't you think?

Another of my favorites is the California Costumes Little Mermaid costume featured at the top of this page. The glittery sequin skirt is very beautiful. Each set comes with the dress and the seashell headpiece.

I love how shimmery the tail is, and the contrast of baby blue and bubblegum pink works really well. This would look great paired with a seaweed themed feather boa like this one.

Another style of mermaid costume is not to have a mermaid tail at the base of it but instead allude to it with a mermaid shaped dress skirt at the bottom. My personal favorite of these is the green costume above - the shape is unusual and unique and the color is very bold and pretty. I think any little girl would love it!

Another cute one is the sheer fabric-tailed skirt and interestingly patterned dress on the right. The colors are very dainty, and the little flower brooch on the front of the dress is very pretty.

So, I've been having a lot of trouble finding a Little Mermaid costume that actually looks like Ariel from the movie - a lot of costumes marketed this way are just sort of generic mermaid costumes, and we can do better than that!

Adult Mermaid Costume

The closest single set costume I've been able to find is the costume featured above. It has the right color tail and bikini top, plus it shows off your midriff in a really sexy way. You can get the matching wig for it here. If you want something that shows off a little less, the one on the right is the best option

If you aren't shopping on a budget and want something a little more accurate, then here is what I recommend you pick up. On the right is a beautiful green mermaid tail that the seller will make and customize to your measurements. Pick up one of those, and combine it with a beautiful red wig like this one.

Little Mermaid Tail Skirt

Then, you will need a purple bikini top. There are a number of options here. The first, and the easiest, is to pick up a plain purple bikini top like this one, or if you want to show of a bit less skin, a purple crop top like this one.

Alternatively, you can browse Etsy for an actual purple seashell bra - there are a number of shops that sell beautiful hand made replicas of Ariel's top, making this the best option for accuracy! If you fancy doing your own arts and crafts, you can paint this seashell bra purple yourself.
